THE BEER

Our flagship beer - the one Rob brewed first and still the beer we brew the most. Scapa Special is a classic pale ale with wide appeal. Ever so balanced, the skill that Rob has so well honed, this beer has biscuity malt upfront and delicate but ascending hops in the middle and end.

The label depicts the voluntary scuttling of the interned German fleet in Scapa Flow, 1919. Once the anchorage of the British Home Fleet, today Scapa Flow is a world class diving destination. Three malts and five hops - from Britain, Germany and the US - make Scapa Special a classic pale ale.

THE BEER

Orkney comprises of 70 islands, 17 or 18 of which are inhabited. Each unique in its own way, locals and tourists travel internally by both sea and air. We use all pale malt and lots of New Zealand hops to create this hoppy but still sessionable low strength beer.

THE BEER

Literally all our beer has been upon the waves, albeit only for an hour or so (on a calm day!) on the ferry from Orkney. India Pale Ales (IPAs) of old were heavily hopped to survive their journey to the colonies. This is Rob’s interpretation - believing the hops may have mellowed by arrival.

THE BEER

This beer is our respectful Orcadian nod to the hoppy and bitter pale ales of America's west coast. Specifically Sierra Nevada Pale Ale and its use of the hop Cascade (the main hop in this pale ale as well).

THE BEER  

Viking Grain Porter

Bere barely is hard to grow and harder to brew with. But, like the Vikings, we know about persistence. This bere porter is deep with an earthy bitterness, proving that even darkness can bring subtlety. The Vikings sailed into the Dark Ages powered by bere. We harness its flavour in this darkly complex porter.

Session IPA. Banyan is navy-speak for a holiday or a party, usually on a beach. We love beaches and Orkney has some of the best. Banyan is a beer for a Banyan.

New Zealand Pale Ale

Thousands of miles apart, Orkney and New Zealand are very similar islands, both in thrall to the sea. Yet the weather they endure is poles apart. An Orkney spring equates to New Zealand's autumn hops. The classic trio of Nelson Sauvin, Motueka and Southern Cross pack citrus zest and orchard fruit into this vinous pale ale.

Muckle means big and this is one mighty IPA. Breathe in the hops like you'd breathe in the fresh Orkney air! We put a lot of hops in Muckle but there's a pervading sweetness as well - it's a balanced IPA. Unfiltered, unfined and unpasteurised to ensure you get the full flavour. May pour hazy.

THE BEER

Low Roller is a Mosaic and Simcoe IPA, inspired by the oceans that surround our brewery. On days after a storm, we often watch the low waves rolling in from miles away, before they burst against the cliffs and release their energy.

On the palate: a 4.9% India Pale Ale with a clean malt profile uplifted by berry, mango and citrus aromas from the pairing of American hops.

Serve cold and drink fresh.

Gluten Free in cans and draught with a production date of May 2024 onwards.

This light amber beer gets its flavour and colour from the 100% Bere malt used. The Orkney-grown Bere adds a minerally, almost salty flavour.

Merry Dancer is a session pale ale at 3.8% ABV - a light beer for dark nights.

Named after the Aurora Borealis that here in Orkney we are lucky enough to catch a glimpse of in the clear winter night skies. In Orkney the northern lights are known as the 'Merry Dancers' and are another reason to enjoy this time of year, some solace from the short days.

We purposefully went for less bitterness but kept the lingering hoppiness at the end. A different from normal water profile also gives this beer a softer mouthfeel, we think!

Classic UK pale malt and fruity hops from New Zealand and North America provide the flavoursome balance.

SWANNAY BREWERY

Our brewery is located on the northwesterly tip of Orkney’s mainland, a wind-battered area known as Swannay. Brewing in a rustic farmstead we’re in a unique location; showered in spray from the Atlantic Ocean in winter and surrounded in fertile farmland in the summer.
